FormalASR: End-to-End Spoken Chinese to Formal Text

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are typically optimized for verbatim transcription, which preserves disfluencies, filler words, and informal spoken structures that are often unsuitable for downstream writing-oriented applications. A common workaround is a two-stage ASR+LLM pipeline for post-editing, but this design increases latency and memory cost and is difficult to deploy on-device. We present FormalASR, two compact end-to-end models (0.6B and 1.7B) that directly transcribe spoken Chinese into formal written text. To enable this setting, we build WenetSpeech-Formal and Speechio-Formal, two large-scale spoken-to-formal datasets constructed by LLM-based rewriting and quality filtering. We then fine-tune Qwen3-ASR at two scales (0.6B and 1.7B) with supervised fine-tuning. Experiments on WenetSpeech-Formal and Speechio-Formal show that FormalASR achieves up to 37.4% relative CER reduction over verbatim baselines, while also improving ROUGE-L and BERTScore. FormalASR requires no post-processing LLM at deployment time, providing a lightweight, on-device solution for spoken-to-formal transcription.

EGAD: Entropy-Guided Adaptive Distillation for Token-Level Knowledge Transfer

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable performance across diverse domains, yet their enormous computational and memory requirements hinder deployment in resource-constrained environments. Knowledge distillation offers a promising solution by transferring knowledge from a large teacher model to a smaller student model. However, existing distillation methods typically treat all tokens equally, ignoring the fact that different tokens contribute unequally to model decisions. This can lead to inefficient knowledge transfer and reduced learning effectiveness. To address this limitation, we propose an entropy-based adaptive distillation strategy that dynamically adjusts the training process at the token level. Our method leverages the teacher's output entropy to guide three aspects of distillation. Specifically, we introduce a token-level curriculum by dynamically shifting focus from low- to high-entropy tokens during training. We further adjust the distillation temperature based on token entropy to better capture teacher confidence patterns. Moreover, we employ a dual-branch architecture for efficient logits-only distillation on easy tokens and deeper feature-based distillation on difficult tokens. Extensive experiments validate the soundness and effectiveness of our method.

MergeQuant: Accurate 4-bit Static Quantization of Large Language Models by Channel-wise Calibration

Quantization has been widely used to compress and accelerate inference of large language models (LLMs). Existing methods focus on exploring the per-token dynamic calibration to ensure both inference acceleration and model accuracy under 4-bit quantization. However, in autoregressive generation inference of long sequences, the overhead of repeated dynamic quantization and dequantization steps becomes considerably expensive. In this work, we propose MergeQuant, an accurate and efficient per-channel static quantization framework. MergeQuant integrates the per-channel quantization steps with the corresponding scalings and linear mappings through a Quantization Step Migration (QSM) method, thereby eliminating the quantization overheads before and after matrix multiplication. Furthermore, in view of the significant differences between the different channel ranges, we propose dimensional reconstruction and adaptive clipping to address the non-uniformity of quantization scale factors and redistribute the channel variations to the subsequent modules to balance the parameter distribution under QSM. Within the static quantization setting of W4A4, MergeQuant reduces the accuracy gap on zero-shot tasks compared to FP16 baseline to 1.3 points on Llama-2-70B model. On Llama-2-7B model, MergeQuant achieves up to 1.77x speedup in decoding, and up to 2.06x speedup in end-to-end compared to FP16 baseline.
